How to clip a chicken's wings

Some of you were asking how you clip a chickens wings...well, here it is

chicken wing
clipping 101.

First of all , find a chicken... :P , pick her up and hold her upright, but hold onto her feet with one hand, or tuck the bird under your arm. Lift up and open the wing and clip only the outer feathers, maybe about 2 inches or so...if you are holding the feet you need someone else to cut the feathers while you hold out the wing. The chicken hates this and will wig out after you put her back down even though the worst is over........thus the wings are clipped and the chicken can't fly out because they have no "air lift" under the wings..... ;) ;)are you still with me??? :) :)Thanks for playin' along, and hope you will know what to do next time your chicken does the houdine escape from their pen .

Greeeeeeen Acres is the place to be..............

I made some sourdough flapjacks for breakfast. The recipe said "this is how the Alaskan prospectors used to make them", Bill and I did not really care for them because they are much more rich than regular pancakes, and were not fluffy, but thick. I can see why the prospectors ate them though, because I don't think I will be able to eat for three days I am so full. Bill said he was taking the left over flapjacks and using them for roofing shingles like Oliver did on Green Acres.... :D :D :D Oh, he's just so funny.......

Before the storm....

Before the horrible and deadly tornadoes of the coming night, it was peaceful and beautifully foggy here at home. It has been warm enough that the chickens were finding worms.
The fog was very thick, so we should have known what was coming. In fact, the weather people kept warning us that extreme things were brewing in the skies.
This blue bird house has been posted on this tree for many years, and every year there are babies born in it. Such a small thing, yet to the baby birds it is all they know as their world.
It is amazing that I grew this gourd about 10 or 11 years ago, let it dry and hung it in this tree, it is still there and full of little branches where birds made their nests over and over. No wonder the pioneers, Indians and ancient people used gourds for eating bowls, cups and tools..

So, back to the storm: Bill and I heard the strangest swooshing sound, the kind of sound we heard when chasing tornadoes, way back when. We stuck our heads out of the front door, and sure enough, the same sound. Bill said it was probably a funnel cloud just above us, that didn't touch down, but it must have caught the tops of some trees because our power went out soon after that. Since we had nothing to do, we drove around town, and it was so funny, there was traffic everywhere...we are sure a bunch or rednecks, a little wind blows by and we are out gawking at it.... :) :) We drove a half a block and there were three large trees down, one looked like lightning had split it, but the others were uprooted. The power line that, is about 30 feet from our house, was sagging very low. Bill had to stop and look at it, :D :D :D :D :D :D I started yelling at him.....curiosity killed the cat, and may kill Bill.... .:-[

It is now several days later and unfortunately there were many deaths in our neighboring states, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama. The damage here was minimal compared to the devastation they all suffered. Locally several semi's were flipped over on the interstate near Salem and the roof was completely taken off of South Central High school in Farina. There was a girl's volley ball game going on in the gymnasium at the time, and there were about a hundred people there (Farina pop. is 400), however, the gym was cleared out in the nick of time and thankfully, no one was hurt there. The next day it rained and then snowed....that was yesterday...today...looks like more snow...I love Illinois...

What Happened to the duck?

So, some of you have asked me, what happened to the duck in the post from yesterday...well....

I don' t know what happened to the duck, I saw it, it took off running down the road, the men chased it, Sally was wanting in on the action, so I had to go the other way and drag her back to her pen, past the little dog, past Bill, past my chickens, so my back was turned for a short time, when I stopped for a minute and turned around ,that's when I saw them looking in the trees....I think they would probably have tried to help it, not have it for supper.....cause the one man, who owned Daisy, is a nice man and has many pets. I didn't recognize the other man that was with him...so don' t know , maybe HE was wanting some stuffed duck.... :-*

Life in the fast lane

It was very foggy this morning , I could hardly see to drive to mom's house, but I finally got there. First we visited Bruce and Barb, we had a great time and it was 12:30 before we all knew it. Mom and I went through Burger King and got some whopper jrs and went back to her house to eat. Then I did my running and went to Walmart too, filled up the car, came home walked the dog.....and that is where my day stopped being normal...so, I am walking Sally by this little creek and out jumps a huge white duck onto the bank, I mean it was snow white, it's wing looked broken. The neighbor guy ,who lost his dog and was driving slowly all over town looking for it, parked his car and he and another guy began chasing the duck......it disappeared in to the woods. For some reason they were looking up in the trees....duh...broken wing??? :-/ and ducks don't land in trees. :PIn the mean time the guy's dog was at my house chasing Bill around, it was really just playing, but Bill was afraid to pick it up because it might get scared and bite, so finally he chased the dog to the edge of the house where the dog's master, who had given up on the duck, was standing talking to Bill's mom, who was outside vacuuming out her car. The little dog (Daisy) ran down the street and the owner ran after it, which was funny because he is in his 60's and not very agile...I yelled at him "Run, Bob, Run" (His name is Bob) :P. Then the chickens must have been finding worms, because they would not go in their coop until it was really dark. I kept looking out of the window so I would know when to go shut the gate, and there they were still scratching away..... To top it all off it was 70 degrees today and the snow is all melted and there is nothing but sludge everywhere. So, if I was a really good story teller, this would be funny.... :) :)..Oh, goody, I see by the St. Louis weather man we are under thunderstorm warnings tonight!!! :(" border="0"> :(" border="0"> :(" border="0"> :(" border="0">Think I need some of these.
That's all I got.
