It was such a beautifiul cool evening
It is such a beautiful cool evening!. We had a picnic out by the fire
pit, then enjoyed some wine until the fire was nothing but embers.
There are hundreds of lightening bugs blinking in our back yard, I could
just watch them forever, but we had to catch up on the last few
episodes of FARGO...hope you all had a good day!

Final stop....Bird City, KS
We have been to Colorado many, many times through the years. We visited
all different areas and love it there. On the way home we always visit
Bird City, KS. The reason is that we have stopped there many times and
have never seen a single human being. The town is perfectly manicured,
with clean streets, new buildings, but no people. It looks like the
perfect place for the Stepford Wives...today we did see 2 people in
front on the post office, and this town dog...that's it..so , it's just
kind of a joke to us to stop here..the end.

The Idle Inn again.....
When we were on vacation in 1998 we drove home on Hwy. 36, as we love
the small towns along the way. On our first trip we stopped at a little
cafe and camp ground near Meadville, MO. It was owned by an older
couple that told us interesting stories of owning their business and
cooked us breakfast and it was also a museum. Many times through the
years we talked about these interesting people and their little cafe,
called the Idle Inn.. So all of these years went by and we found
it, closed, of course, but we stopped and took some pictures. We were
looking around and a guy on a motorcycling drove up and how ironic, it
was the son of these two people who owned it. So cool to talk to him
and to find out that his dad had passed, but his mom was still alive at
97 and that he had saved the stools and main lunch counter and put them
in his new home, such a treat. So, again, here is a photo from the day
we were there the first time and last week, sad to see it closed, but it
was open for over 30 years, if only those walls could talk.

The Dunes revisited..
Don't
fret, my vacation report is about to come to an end..We left Eagle's
Nest, NM and headed for Alamosa, CO.to the Great Sand Dunes National
Park.and Preserve. We had been here before, many years ago and camped
on the Dunes. An amazing fluke of nature...so here are some photos from
THEN and NOW...we climbed to the top of the 700 foot dunes back in 1998
on a cool November day, but since it was nearly 100 degrees the day we
were there last week, we decided to just walked in the water that melted
down from the mountains.( Sangre De Cristo) . Hundreds of people were
enjoying the place though, a must see if you are in the area.
Then......
Then......

Cimarron Canyon State Park
We went to Cimarron Canyon state park that wasn't far from our
campground, beautiful park. We hiked and climbed around there for a
while, really enjoyed the cool morning.
Kaw-Lija's
This became our favorite place to eat in Eagle's Nest, NM, it was a
retro 50's and 60's mom and pop place named, Kaw Lija's, like the wooden
indian in the Hank William's song..great food, but most of all the
people were so friendly and fun with good ol' rock and roll always
playing in the background. Of course, there was a wooden Indian standing
outside the front door. The menus were on the back of old records. The
whole village is very quaint with many family owned businesses. The Cloud
9 gift shop has fresh homemade fudge everyday...there was no dieting on
this vacation..lol...Oh, and there was an ice cream parlor in the back
of the restaurant..!
Camping at Eagle's Nest, NM
BTW, we drove through Santa Fe, and it was packed with people, traffic
and was difficult to find places to park our motorhome, so we decided to
come back another time and plan ahead a little more, looked like lots
of shopping and art museums, but there were some historical things we
were interested in, so that's for another time, so we moved on to our
new favorite camping place, Eagle's Nest, NM..just gorgeous. It is in
the middle of the mountains that you see in the photos, with a beautiful
lake as well, we stayed here a couple of days and visited the sights in
the area. We will definitely be coming back here to camp. The days
were hot, but was always a breeze, and the nights were cold, one morning
we had frost on our motorhome!
