The Visit

Mom and I went to Subway for lunch, as usual. It was a pretty nice day for February. After lunch we got on the internet and ordered some wine for Kim and Sylvia from the Genkota winery in Mt. Vernon. They showed us such a great time on our vacation and Kim and furnished mom and I with laptop ibooks. We sent them three bottles of our favorite wines in appreciation. After that we went to the Health food store and mom got some peach tea and I got organic raw sugar. I thought the lady that owned the "Nutrition Center" had died, what a surprise to see her sitting there as always, glad I was wrong!!

Then we went to uncle Bob and Aunt Betty's house and took them some of our eggs. They really appreciated them. It was so nice to visit with them. Got to visit with Rob too! After an hour or so we headed back to mom's and then I came home. It was a really enjoyable day! My time is running out here, winter is about over, so I try to enjoy each day!

My Glamorous life!

It was a cold and damp day, but we decided to clean the chicken coop...oh, joy! Nothing to bring you down to earth more than scoopin' poop!. We also raked lots of dry leave into piles to put in the chicken pen. It has been so rainy and wet, it is a mess. While we were raking the chickens were running around the yard.....FREE RANGE CHICKEN EGGS FOR SALE......and they started running through out piles of leaves throwing them around with their feet!...it was just like having a bunch ot little kids around...only cheeper (yes, I spelled it that way on purpose, am I funnyor what?......probably or what). At the end of the day it was nice to be outside in the crisp cool air doing something besides vegetating on the couch!

That's all I got!

It must be Halloween in everyone's head when they think of me..

One of my friends on the Clayboard made this little picture for me. It is my "cell" as
in "Cellphone". Thanks Jeanene!..these people must really know me..lol.

Hosted by Photobucket.com
This past week has not been a good one. Bill's grandma died. She was in her 90's and has been ill for some time. The funeral service was like a Sunday morning church service, with cheerful hymns and a serman. Things didn't seem so sad that way. IT was a great idea, it was a celebration, as it should be.

Secondly, Bill has had the worst head cold ever. I have just been waving good-night to him and sleeping in the extra room.

Thirdly, my Apple laptop just went dark, never to return again. I wrote Kim today and he is sending the 15inch powerbook to me that I used while mom and I were visiting.

Other than that all is well on the Halterman Chicken ranch. We are not doing much but relaxing right now, in about 5 weeks we will have the ice cream shoppe open and it's back to work for the both of us.

I think I will just relax in my "cell", maybe Clay will give me a lick of his ice cream cone!

Working Women's survival convention

Teresa and I went to St. Louis on the Metrolink to the convention center to our annual pilgrimage to the Working Women's survival show!. We usually go in a van with a bunch of other girls on Friday, but we decided to go on Saturday and just the two of us. It is so difficult to keep track of each other in that place!

We got there about noon and had a fantastic time. There were alot of new products, we bought vitamins and tooth whitening products. Teresa bought more stuff, but I was trying to be reasonable! We also bought what we called our "foofoo" pins, which was made of feathers. Teresa's was black and looked like a turantula..lol!

The speaker was Carolyn Kepler from the tv show "The Apprentice", she is the exec. vice president of the Trump organization!. She was really interesting and funny!

We left at 7:00, well, we had to, they turned out the lights! We ate at the Chuchwagon in Fairview Hts, bout Robert some White Castle hamburgers, Bill some Krispy Kreme donuts and some hotwings from Hooters (for Robert Too!)

It was so much more fun with there being just the two of us, I think it is the best time I have ever had at the event. We tried to remember how many years we have been going to it, and I think we arrived at 12 years, wew, we have been through alot together, she's just my best buddy ever!

Got home about midnight.......me tired!

Off to see the Wizard

Well, what an exciting day!!.. We went to Kentucky and paid for our new ice cream machine which will be delivered in about a month. I can' t believe it is getting so close, spring I mean. I am ready though, even though it is nice to have each day free, I need to feel like I am accomplishing something! We grabbed a sandwich and came home. See? I need some excitement in my life!

Oh, well, I guess I shouldn't complain....Bill is a prince...lol

Mom and I went to Subway for lunch. On the way there we passed Bill, but I didn' t see him, I had something more important in mind...a Teriyaki Onion Chicken sub...who needs to wave at the husband when there is food involved!

After lunch we went back to mom's and made some recipe cards on the computer. We had coffee and cookies and we packaged up Doris's present! I hope she likes it! We had a great time making it for her!

I came home about 5:00. Spent the evening reading...sheesh there is nothing on the tv anymore!

The Super Bowl and a mysterious visitor

Today was the superbowl. The Patriots and the Eagles. I don' t watch sports, so I didn't have a favorite team. We watched though because we are Americans and , hey, it was the super bowl!
Paul McCartney was the half-time show and he was wonderful, very classy and no "wardrobe malfunction", just lots of good music, reminiscent of my high school days at Salem High...Beatles...slumber parties...prom...those were the days. In the second half the game finally got exciting and the Patriots wond, 24 to 21. It is the 3rd time they have won in the last 4 years...so the news media is calling it the "Patriots Dynasty".

This picture is from the Mardi Gras, but I just had to post it by itself, even though it is in the collage. If you look closley behind the last girl on the right, there is a guy who saw me taking the picture and just popped in behind her. I knew he was their and took the picture anyway, so funny, he got his picture taken with a bevy of beauties and they were not even aware. So, he is my mysterious visitor.

As if there isn't enough to read, here is a link to a short history about Soulard in St.Louis:

Soulard Mardi Gras 2005

So we get up Saturday morning. I had been hinting for several days about the Mardi Gras in St. Louis...as usually...he just didn't get it. I am having coffee and still in my jammies, he asks what I want to do today...............(well, duh!!!).

So I threw my make up on, a blonde wing and some beads and headed for Shiloh, Il, where we caught the Metro-link commuter train and went into St. Louis where we exited the train onto the "Mardi Gras" bus and were taken to Soulard, the "French Quarter" if you will, of St. Louis. Strange I have been to St. Louis alot, but never ventured to this area. It has cobble-stone streets and old ornate buildings. On any other day, it is a residential area with only a bar or two and a Farmer's market. But today is "Mardi Gras"...and it is a totally different landscape.

We missed the parade...due to hubby not catching on...but we got there about 2:00 pm. It was unseasonably warm, 62 degrees, sunny and no wind. You never know what you're gonna get here, so the day was a blessing, weather-wise.

We found bratwurst and beer right away and started roaming around the many streets, packed, shoulder to shoulder with people. Most of them were in costume or at least had tons of beads around their necks. It wasn't long before the stupid crazies began their activities. Of course, I had to buy a hot pink boa and more beads!

1. A very large guy was already carrying his bleary-eyed drunk buddy over his shoulder, all of his beads were clinking and he was trying to see, it was pitiful and funny. Don't think he will make it until midnight! He will be lucky to make it to 4:00.

2. As we were walking along, there was a pretty young girl, trying to hold herself upright while her friend fed her pizza...don't know what that was all about.

3. Seeing boobies was no problem today. It is against the law, ya know, to show bodily parts in public, but on this one day...it is ok.......who makes the laws around here??? one guess.. MEN!
It seemed like every window had a pretty young thing begging for beads from the crowd below. There was one butt shot from a guy, I just happened to be there, he was young and cute, so it was all good on that account.

4. Soon some fights ensued. Guys running down the street after each other, and smashing each other in the face. One guy had been beaten up and he came walking back with blood running down his face. I guess he came back to get his girlfriend, about that time the guy who had hit him came running up with his camera and flashed a quick picture. I can just here him: "Hey, man remember when I smacked ya"...bragging rights.

5. There was much singing and dancing..and the strangest thing....everyone was on their cellphones....I mean, it was uncanny how many there were. I don't live under a rock, but it ws ridiculous.

Before I go on. Instead of posting lots of pix here, because, you who know me, know that I always have my camera ready and I took lots of pix. So, I made a collage .....you can get the idea!

There was a great Blues band on the street and a beer tent had a fantastic rock band "The Shrinking violets"...they were all pretty manly, so I don' t know where that name came from, maybe they all have a secret life....anyway. Bill and I were in a huge crowd dancing while the white boys sang "Hey Ya"...like I said, they were really good. Later the Channel 11 news guy was on stage filming the crowd and we got on the news dancing to some Stone Temple Pilots We especially enjoyed this part, since we both like to dance. There was some oriental guy who could speak very little english. He was standing on a chair with a trench coat on filming everything that was happening on the stage....especially since there were pretty young things from the audience dancing up there and sometimes they would give a booby shot. I don't think he missed anything....don't understand the trench coat, maybe he was a spy (german accent here).

6. Soon evening came and people were falling down, screaming, getting drunker by the minute.

7. There are signs posted everywhere telling all to use the porta-potties, do not urinate here..this is private property......but, of course, the men didn't listen. They were lined up here and there relieving themselves around trees and behind walls...not far behind them were the police. They slapped the handcuffs on them and hauled them away to jail...guess they couldn't read!...

Soon it was completely dark and the lights of the village came on. It added a whole different atmosphere to the place. I took a couple of time exposures/night settings where you can see the movement of the crowd. I thought they were interesting.

By 9:00 we were ready to leave. The 10 blocks of Soulard were still filled with people. Heliocopters were flying overhead filming the crowds. We boarded our bus with a bunch of younger girls and guys. They were throwing their beads at each other, trying to see if they could get them around their necks. We would cheer them on when they finally made one. I felt sorry for the bus driver, driving through the busy city on a Saturday night!.

It was a fun time, as it alway is with Bill, because even when their is nothing happening, he is always hilarious.

So back home to the chickens and the dog we went.

A Quote from Cindy

Today is Saturday and I was just reading the Clayboard. Pamela, from New York, was pleading for help on how to understand the changing moods of her teen-age daughter. This is quote from a post by our friend, Cindy from Texas:

You know how I can relate everything to a scene in a movie. I am reminded of the scene in one of Steve Martin's Movies, PARENTHOOD??? ( Sheeeh, I should know the title!!) Anyhoo...the sometimes "flitty" grandma makes this profound statement about life being a roller coaster, and how some people don't get on the roller coaster at all because they are afraid, but she got on, because it was scary and fun all at the same time. It just depends on how you interpreted the ride.

I just thought this was so profound and I have seen the movie several times, but don't recall this scene....what?.....was I gone getting popcorn?

Yanni, Yanni, oh Yanni

Went to mom's today. She had a great beef and noodle casserole made for lunch. For dessert and lemon bluberry cake with almonds. As, always, mom, you out did yourself!

We spent the day making some presents for some special people. (Those special people read this blog, so I am not saying what their surprises are. We had alot of fun doing them. Through the afternoon we listened to Yanni. Mom and I always remember our great vacation in California when we listen to him and since we got to see him in person, front row seats (thanks , Sylvia), it means even more.

Life is slow and relaxing right now. It has been snowing again, but the weather guy says warm weather is coming in the next few days.

Thanks for another great day, mom, love ya bunches.

The Chicken diaries

It was a normal day in Halterman-land. Coffee and business channel in the morning, lunch, laundry. Bill was outside talking to the neighbor. The chickens were running around the yard scratching and eating "things"...??

I happened to look out the window and about that time one of the red chickens came speeding by. In her mouth was something black and wiggly (I found out later, it was a lizard, yuck!). Close behind her was the rest of the flock running after her like crazed roadrunners. She ran around a tree, darted in the grapevines, ran towards the coop, all of her sister chickens (and the rooster) we're close behind her. They were all wanting the lizard!!!... Bill was standing by the barn talking to Jake, here came the chickens around the corner of the barn, running past them! The neighbor said he had never seen a lizard in the snow!. They all ran off into the back field, where, I assume, SOMEONE at the lizard. They all walked back pecking and scratching like nothing had happened.

We bought the chickens for the eggs, but I'm beginning to think we bought them for entertainment! Ah, life on the farm...eee...iiii....eeee..iiii...oooo!
